
Los Angeles International, commonly referred to by its IATA code LAX with letters pronounced individually is the primary airport of Los Angeles, California. It is located 26 km (16 miles) away from the city centre.

Originally it was known as Mines Field after William Mines, the real estate agent who brokered the land deal. The name was changed to Los Angeles International in 1949. The building was designed by architect Paul Williams from the firm Pereira & Luckman and completed in 1961. It resembles a flying saucer which has landed on its legs. The building was declared a historical and cultural monument in 1992 by the City Council.
